Overall, wind and solar together made up the large majority of renewable electricity generated in 2023, while hydropower, biomass, and geothermal played far smaller roles. Meanwhile, the share of total electricity accounted for by renewables rose steadily across the whole period, more than tripling between 2005 and 2023.
In terms of the source breakdown, wind was the largest contributor, making up forty-two percent of renewable electricity in 2023, followed by solar at twenty-eight percent. Together, these two sources accounted for seventy percent of the total. Hydropower supplied a further eighteen percent, while biomass and geothermal contributed just eight percent and four percent respectively.
Turning to the line graph, the share of total electricity generated from renewables rose consistently, from twelve percent in 2005 to thirty-eight percent in 2023. The rate of increase was faster in the second half of the period, climbing by fifteen percentage points between 2015 and 2023, compared with an eleven-point rise between 2005 and 2015.
