The chart illustrates the number of tourist nights, measured in millions, spent in five types of accommodation — hotels, holiday rentals, hostels, camping, and B&Bs — in 2010, 2016, and 2022.
Overall, the most striking development was the rapid rise of holiday rentals, which surpassed hotels to become the most popular form of accommodation by the end of the period, while all three more traditional options recorded declines and hostels grew only modestly.
Holiday rental nights rose dramatically, from 60 million in 2010 to 140 million in 2016 and then to 300 million in 2022, a fivefold increase overall. Hotels, by contrast, fell from 280 million in 2010 to 230 million in 2022, meaning that holiday rentals had surpassed them by the final year, having previously been far less popular.
Among the remaining categories, hostel nights rose only slightly, from 45 million to 60 million, while camping fell gradually from 90 million to 78 million and B&Bs recorded the steepest decline of the three, dropping from 80 million to 58 million over the period.
