The graph shows the overall crime rate in Brookfield, in offences per 1,000 people, between 2000 and 2023, while the bar chart shows the number of offences of three specific types, in the same unit, in 2010 and 2023. Overall, the crime rate rose to a peak in the mid-2000s before falling steadily for the rest of the period, with the pace of decline slowing considerably towards the end; among individual offence types, assault was the only one that did not follow this general downward trend. The overall crime rate climbed from 45 offences per 1,000 people in 2000 to a peak of 52 in 2005. It then declined continuously through to 2023, though not at a constant rate: the fall was steepest between 2010 and 2015, dropping by 10 points, before decelerating to a fall of 8 points between 2015 and 2020 and just 2 points between 2020 and 2023, ending the period at 28. Turning to the bar chart, theft and burglary both roughly halved between 2010 and 2023, from 20 to 12 and from 15 to 8 offences per 1,000 people respectively, broadly mirroring the overall decline. Assault, however, bucked this trend: rather than falling, it rose slightly, from 8 to 9 offences per 1,000 people, making it the only category to move in the opposite direction to the overall crime rate.
