The graph illustrates changes in the percentage of total book sales accounted for by three formats — e-books, audiobooks, and physical books — in a European country between 2010 and 2018. Overall, e-book sales grew considerably throughout the period, eventually surpassing both audiobooks and physical books to become the most popular format, while sales of the other two formats declined, albeit along different paths. The proportion of e-book sales rose from just five percent in 2010 to sixty percent in 2018. Growth was comparatively slow in the first three years, but the rate then accelerated sharply, and by 2015 e-books accounted for thirty-three percent of sales, having already surpassed audiobooks, which stood at thirty-four percent at the beginning of that year. E-books went on to surpass physical books as well, between 2016 and 2017, and finished the period as the clear market leader. By contrast, physical book sales fell steadily throughout, from fifty-eight percent in 2010 to just eighteen percent in 2018. Audiobook sales followed a different pattern: the proportion rose from thirty-two percent in 2010 to a peak of forty-two percent in 2013, before declining to twenty-five percent by 2018.
