The graph shows the percentage of adults who owned a smartphone in Country C between 2005 and 2023, while the pie chart shows the main purpose for which owners used their phones in 2023. Overall, smartphone ownership followed a clear S-shaped pattern, starting slowly, accelerating sharply in the middle of the period, and then levelling off as it approached saturation; by 2023, social media and messaging together accounted for the majority of smartphone use. Ownership grew only modestly in the earliest years, rising from five percent in 2005 to twenty percent in 2010. The rate of growth then increased sharply between 2010 and 2015, the fastest period of the whole timeframe, with ownership more than doubling from twenty percent to fifty-five percent. Growth remained fairly strong over the next five years, reaching eighty-two percent by 2020, but then slowed considerably, climbing by just a further eight percentage points to reach ninety percent by 2023 as the market neared saturation. In terms of how smartphones were used in 2023, social media was the single most common purpose, accounting for thirty-five percent of use, followed by messaging and calls at twenty-five percent; together these two purposes made up sixty percent of all smartphone use. Web browsing and gaming accounted for a further twenty-seven percent combined, while work-related use and other purposes made up the remaining thirteen percent.
