The chart shows the average number of hours per week that men and women in Country Y spent on domestic chores in 1980, 2000 and 2020.
Overall, men's weekly hours on chores rose steadily across the period while women's fell steadily, so that the substantial gap between the two groups in 1980 had narrowed to only a small difference by 2020.
In 1980, women spent an average of 21 hours per week on domestic chores, more than five times the 4 hours recorded for men. Over the following two decades, men's hours rose to 8 by 2000 and climbed further to 11 by 2020, increasing at a broadly similar rate in each period. Women's hours, by contrast, fell more sharply in the earlier period, dropping to 15 by 2000, before declining more slowly to 13 by 2020.
As a result, the gap between men and women narrowed considerably over time: from 17 hours in 1980, to 7 hours in 2000, to just 2 hours in 2020. By the end of the period, men's and women's weekly hours on domestic chores had become almost equal, although women still did slightly more than men.
