The bar chart shows how commuters in Rivertown travelled to work using four methods of transport in 2000, 2010 and 2023, while the table shows the average time each method took for two age groups in 2023. Overall, car was the most common method in 2000 and again in 2023, but it was unexpectedly surpassed by bicycle in 2010, when a temporary surge made cycling the most popular way to travel to work that year; bus, meanwhile, was the only method to rise consistently throughout the whole period. In terms of commute time, older commuters generally took longer than younger ones for most methods, except by bus, where the pattern was reversed. In 2000, car accounted for fifty-eight percent of journeys to work, well ahead of bus (twenty percent), bicycle (twelve percent) and walking (ten percent). By 2010, however, the picture had changed dramatically: bicycle use surged to forty percent, surpassing car, whose share fell sharply to just thirty percent, while bus rose to twenty-five percent and walking dropped to five percent. This spike in cycling proved short-lived, though, as by 2023 bicycle use had dropped back to twenty-three percent — still almost double its 2000 level but far below its 2010 peak. Car recovered some ground over the same period, climbing back to forty-two percent, while bus continued its steady rise to thirty percent, the only method to increase in every period. Turning to the table, car and bicycle were both quicker for younger commuters, taking 18 and 22 minutes respectively compared with 20 and 28 minutes for the 40-and-over group, and walking showed a similarly small gap (15 versus 16 minutes). Bus was the exception to this pattern: it took slightly longer for under-40s, at 35 minutes, than for the older group, at 33 minutes.
