The two pie charts illustrate how the proportions of five types of material recycled in Elmswood changed between 2005 and 2023. Overall, plastic surpassed paper and cardboard to become the most heavily recycled material by 2023, while food waste recorded the sharpest relative increase of any category. By contrast, metal recycling remained comparatively stable over the period. In 2005, paper and cardboard accounted for the largest share of recycled waste, at forty percent, but this figure had fallen to just twenty percent by 2023. Plastic followed the opposite trajectory, rising from twelve percent to twenty-eight percent over the same period and surpassing paper as the leading category. Food waste recycling underwent the most dramatic change, climbing from a mere three percent in 2005 to eighteen percent in 2023 — a six-fold increase. Glass recycling declined moderately, from twenty-five percent to nineteen percent, while metal fell only slightly, from twenty percent to fifteen percent, making it the category with the least change over the eighteen-year period.
